Sony Has 10 Movies/TV Shows In The Works Based On PlayStation Games

One of the ways Sony is looking to grow the PlayStation business and help its franchises reach a wider audience is by making movies and TV shows based on its series. As part of Sony’s latest Corporate Strategy meeting, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan said the company currently has 10 projects in the works.

“We will continue to strengthen the experience for our community through collaboration with partners and across Sony Group. One especially noteworthy collaboration is in our ongoing work with Sony Pictures to adapt key game IP for film and TV entertainment with 10 projects currently in various stages of development,” Ryan said.

He did not list off the 10 projects, but we do already know about some of them. Sony’s recently formed PlayStation Productions is heading up the development of these film and TV projects, and so far they include the following:

Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg; set for release in February 2022 [more]Ghost of Tsushima movie from John Wick’s Chad Stahelski; no release date set [more]Twisted Metal TV show with Deadpool’s writers; no release date set [more]The Last of Us TV show with Craig Mazin for HBO; no release date set [more]

One PlayStation series that will not get a TV show or a movie, at least not yet, is God of War. A spokesperson for the company recently confirmed this to the New York Times.

Before the formation of PlayStation Productions, Sony released a Ratchet & Clank movie in 2016, while a Heavenly Sword film debuted in 2014.

Earlier this year, Ryan spoke about Sony’s upcoming plans for additional TV shows and movies, alluding to further announcements to come. He said the Uncharted movie and the Last of Us TV show are “just the beginning of the expansion of our storytelling into new media and even wider audiences. Sony is a creative entertainment company, and entertainment has never been more important.”

In addition to creating more TV shows and movies, Sony is looking to grow the PlayStation business through more mobile games.
