Not even 80 Mondays are enough to stop Garfield. Sony has the film, which stars Chris Pratt as the eternally smug tabby cat, set to release on February 16, 2024, Deadline reports.
This perfect post-Valentine’s Day movie not only stars Pratt as Garfield but will also feature Samuel L. Jackson as Garfield’s father, Vic. Casting for Garfield’s beleaguered owner Jon has not yet been announced. Mark Dindal (The Emperor’s New Groove) is directing, and David Reynolds (Finding Nemo) wrote the screenplay.
Alcon Entertainment is producing the picture, with Sony distributing. The previous Garfield films, produced by Dune Entertainment, starred Bill Murray as Garfield; notably, Murray played Peter Venkman in the Ghostbusters films, and the late Lorenzo Music voiced Venkman in The Real Ghostbusters cartoon. Music then voiced Garfield in the Garfield and Friends cartoon. Murray completed the circle when he took on the role for the 2004 film and its sequel, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, in 2006.
Deadline notes that the only other titles currently scheduled to compete directly with Chris Pratt’s quest for Hollywood voice acting dominance–he’s also voicing Nintendo mascot Mario in an upcoming film–are an untitled Marvel film and an untitled Universal film set to release in the same window.
