Marvel’s line of graphic novels has seen its A-list talent work on expanding the Star Wars universe, and some of the standout stories here feature the dark lord of the Sith himself, Darth Vader. There have been some especially good stories here from an incredible roster of artists and writer Greg Pak, detailing what Vader was up to in the gaps between the movies. Dark Heart of the Sith sees Vader embark on a bloody mission of rage-filled revenge against everything and everyone who helped to hide his only son, while Unbound Force examines what would happen if Vader lost his control over the Force while opportunistic elements close in on him.
Other highlights include Dark Droids–imagine if all the machines in Star Wars suddenly decided to go full Skynet on organics–and Darth Maul shines in a mini-series where he establishes his own criminal organization so that he can wage war on his former master. Several books are also on sale–they’re like graphic novels only without the cool pictures–and you can get a pretty good deal on Timothy Zahn’s classic Thrawn Trilogy from the Expanded Universe era. This bundle includes Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command in one attractive combo pack.
Lastly, there are a few Star Wars books on sale, but they’re not included in the B2G1 promotion. Normally, $150, The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia is down to $63.30 and offers three volumes of information based on the original six movies, The Clone Wars, radio dramas, comics, novels, cartoons, short stories, and video games. It’s worth noting that this hardcover collection was published in 2008, so a lot of it is out of date in comparison to the current Star Wars lore. Still, it’s an interesting collection of what Star Wars was at the time, before creator George Lucas sold the franchise to Disney several years later.
If you are after something more contemporary, the deluxe Secrets of the Galaxy box set is a fun set of guides and secrets written with an in-universe style. Published in 2016, it features data from the Jedi Order, the Sith, the Bounty Hunters Guild, and the Empire itself.
