It’s been years since State of Decay 3 was first revealed, and since then we’ve seen nothing about it–like, at all. But from the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, we finally got another look, including glimpses of what appears to be gameplay for the first time.
The trailer emphasized the four-player co-op nature of the game and the open-world setting that allows for emergent stories to be created by players surviving the end of the world together. Undead Labs said State of Decay 3 will allow for much greater distances between co-op players playing in a shared-world experience after previous games had smaller maps with still stricter tethering. The trailer from today, the studio said, is entirely built with in-game assets.
State of Decay 3 will still feature permadeath too, which has long been a staple of the series. The studio has been collaborating with Obsidian to bring Grounded’s shared-world save system into State of Decay 3, giving players an enhanced means of sharing their story with others. Rather than be a guest in another’s world, you’ll now come and go with or without them, progressing the world together or apart.
A release date, or even window, didn’t accompany the reveal, but it was reiterated that the game will launch directly into Game Pass whenever it arrives.
