The Batman Spin-Off TV Show About Penguin Is Really Happening At HBO Max

The roadmap for The Batman’s proposed spin-off TV shows has been confusing at best. Last year, two spin-offs were announced for the project, one focusing on the GCPD and Jim Gordon, the other focusing on Penguin. Now, after the movie has finally hit theaters, only one of those is actually going to be made a reality. The Hollywood Reporter reports that HBO Max has officially ordered the Penguin show to series, while the GCPD show has “evolved” into an Arkham Asylum focused story that has yet to receive an official order.

The Penguin show will, unsurprisingly, follow Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) as he works his way up to presumably fill the newly created power vacuum at the top of Gotham City’s underworld. The Batman director Matt Reeves will serve as executive producer alongside Farrell himself. Lauren LeFranc (Agents of SHIELD, Chuck) will serve as showrunner.

In a statement, Farrell expressed his excitement for the project. “The world that Matt Reeves created for The Batman is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot. I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.”

Meanwhile, a sequel to The Batman has yet to be officially announced, but an ARG-style website seems to be dropping some pretty major hints about the possibility.

The Batman is in theaters now.
