Prime Video’s TV show The Boys returns for its fourth season on June 16, and it will contain the scariest sequence in the series so far. That’s according to The Boys creator Eric Kripke, who told SFX Magazine that Season 4 has some intense sequences that fans won’t soon forget.
“There is certain imagery, for sure, this season, that you’ll never be able to get out of your eyeballs,” Kripke said.
This is a bold statement to make given The Boys Seasons 1-3 have featured many intense and grotesque sequences. The Season 3 episode “Herogasm”–which depicted superheroes having group sex and using their powers–comes to mind when thinking about sequences from The Boys that are hard to forget.
Kripke said the team isn’t intentionally trying to one-up any previous season when it comes to blood, gore, or shock value, saying, “We have never had the conversation in the writers’ room of like, ‘Okay, how do we top last season?'”
That being said, Kripke said Season 4 will up the ante in some respects, specifically when it comes to Homelander.
“He’s a dense psychological snake’s nest of neediness and vulnerability and self-hatred, and he’s going to deal with that in some pretty gnarly ways,” Kripke said. “There’s an episode this season where it could be the scariest we’ve ever seen. I called [Homelander actor Antony Starr] after looking at the dailies, and I’m like, ‘Wow, man, that is some next-level scary shit.’ And not just by being violent, but just how un-fucking-hinged he is. It’s a delight.”
The Boys Season 4 premieres June 16 on Prime Video.
