Being a fan of a show on the ratings edge is tough–every season, you get to wonder whether you’re going to get more or not. The CW announced today which shows they plan to renew, with a few surprises and conspicuous absences among them.
In total, the network has renewed 10 shows, including some of their DC superhero shows, drama shows, and action shows. Renewed shows include:
Superman & Lois (Season 3)The Flash (Season 9)Nancy Drew (Season 4)All American (Season 5)Riverdale (Season 7)Kung Fu (Season 3)Walker (Season 3)Penn & Teller: Fool Us (Season 9)Masters of Illusion (Season 9)World’s Funniest Animals (Season 3)
Absent from that list are two of DC’s superhero shows, Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman; the former ended on a cliffhanger that featured Donald Faison (Scrubs) joining the cast as DC character Booster Gold. Legends has previously been used as a mid-season replacement, so it’s possible that its renewal is just still pending. Batwoman has had a tumultuous time ever since original star Ruby Rose left at the end of Season 1. The CW cast Javicia Leslie in the Batwoman role to replace her, and the recently-completed season 3 marks her second season wearing the cape and cowl. Another superhero series, Stargirl, just finished filming Season 3, so we’re not expecting to hear more about that show until the third season is at least on television.
On the other end, Nancy Drew’s renewal is more of a surprise, as the show has struggled with ratings (despite being a massively underrated gem in this writer’s opinion). Meanwhile, The Flash continues to run tirelessly even though it probably should’ve hung up the boots a few seasons back.
The network has not yet announced release dates for any of these premieres, though most of them will likely premiere in September or October.
