The newest season of Audio Logs continues with an episode focused on Immortality, a unique and award-winning game from Half Mermaid and Sam Barlow. Immortality maintained the narrative and character-driven focus of the team’s previous titles Her Story and Telling Lies, as well as the investigative nature of gameplay. However, it was was also an ambitious new take that together three unreleased movies. Together, these films and archival footage of their production, told the story of Marissa Marcel and her path through the world of filmmaking.
Immortality allowed players to look back through the archival footage by interacting with a system inspired by moviola machines to piece together what happened during the production of those three films. By doing this they would better understand the fate of Marcel. Along the way, however, the player would learn that something unexpected is also happening beneath the surface.
In this episode of Audio Logs, director Sam Barlow talks about how Half Mermaid came up with Immortality, the thinking behind its design, the inspirations for its subject matter, and how it cleverly reveals the sinister things that are actually happening.
