Through most of the Terminator movies, Skynet is the ultimate AI and the instrument of humanity’s downfall. But what if Skynet isn’t the only AI to worry about? Netflix’s Terminator Zero anime is shifting its focus to Japan, where scientist Malcolm Lee has created Kokoro, an AI that could rival Skynet in the future. That’s why Malcolm and his family have been targeted by Skynet in the new trailer for the series.
When Malcolm says that the end of the world is tomorrow, it’s not just an expression. The show is set in 1997, shortly before the events of Judgment Day. And much like Sarah Connor in the Terminator films, Malcolm is cursed with visions of humanity’s impending nuclear doom. But Skynet isn’t the only advanced AI that can set off this cataclysmic chain of events. Malcolm’s creation, Kokoro, may also sit in judgment of humanity and decide that people simply aren’t worth saving.
Regardless, the human resistance has sent a soldier named Eiko back in time to protect Malcolm from a Terminator that was sent by Skynet. Unfortunately for them, the Terminator knows all too well that if it can’t strike at Malcolm directly, then it can use his three children to get to him. And even Eiko can’t be everywhere at once to counter all of the Terminator’s moves.
André Holland stars in the series as Malcolm Lee, with Rosario Dawson as the voice of Kokoro, Sonoya Mizuno as Eiko, and Timothy Olyphant as the Terminator. Ann Dowd also has a role as The Prophet, an “espiritual” leader for the resistance in the future.
Terminator Zero will premiere on Netflix on August 29.
