The Last Of Us Season 2 Gets Exciting Update About Its Release Date

HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 is set for release in 2025, but when during the year can fans expect the sophomore season? HBO programming boss Casey Bloys said in an interview that The Last of Us will return at some point in the first half of 2025.

Bloys told Deadline he expects The Last of Us Season 2 to be “in the Emmy window,” which means at least six episodes of the season must be released by the assumed cutoff date of May 31, 2025 for consideration at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards. Given the expectation by Bloys for The Last of Us Season 2 to be in the Emmy window, fans can expect it to be released before then.

These cutoff rules meant HBO’s House of the Dragon Season 2 was not eligible for this past weekend’s 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, and will be up for nominations next year alongside The Last of Us Season 2 (if it earns any nominations). The Last of Us Season 1 earned 24 Emmy nominations and won eight.

That’s all Bloys had to say about the release window for The Last of Us Season 2, but he did tease that he’s seen parts of The Last of Us Season 2. “I think everybody is going to love what [co-creator] Craig [Mazin] is doing,” he said.

The Last of Us Season 2 is expected to adapt some of the events of The Last of Us: Part II the game and introduce new characters like Abby, who will be played by Kaitlyn Dever. Isabela Merced, meanwhile, joins the cast as Dina, while Young Mazino plays Jesse. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are coming back to reprise their leading characters, Joel and Ellie.

It was also recently reported that Dever required extra security detail for The Last of Us Season 2, presumably due to the controversy surrounding the character Abby.

As for the game series, Naughty Dog has heavily teased The Last of Us: Part III.

“I’ve been thinking–is there a concept there [for The Last of Us 3]? For, now years, I haven’t been able to find that concept. But recently that’s changed,” game director Neil Druckmann said in an interview published in February 2024. “I don’t have a story. But I do have that concept that is, to me, as exciting as 1, as exciting as 2,” he said. “As its own thing, and yet has this throughline for all three. So it does feel like there’s probably one more chapter to this story.”
