The Last Of Us TV Series Writer Teases Changes From The Game

HBO’s long-awaited The Last of Us TV series premieres on January 15, and a new behind-the-scenes video teases more of what to expect, including changes from the game it’s based on.

Writer and producer Craig Mazin says in the video that he and the team have made thoughtful changes in order to adapt the game for TV. This includes adding “more” than what fans know from the game.

“When you’re adapting something like a video game, changes have to be done smartly. We are telling more. There is so much in between,” Mazin said.

As announced previously, HBO’s The Last of Us series will cover the first game’s story for Season 1, with Season 2 potentially digging into the events of The Last of Us: Part II. The Last of Us tells the story of a mind-altering fungi that has devastating consequences. Mazin said the game is based on a real fungi, and that “if it were to be able to infect humans, it would go like [it does in the game]. It’s terrifying,” he said.

Game director Neil Druckmann is also featured in the video, saying the TV series “does [the game] justice and then some.”

Pedro Pascal plays Joel and Bella Ramsey plays Ellie in the drama, which also features Murray Bartlett as Frank, Diego Luna as Tommy, Nick Offerman as Bill, and Merle Dandridge as Marlene.
