The Legend Of Doom Rebuilds The Classic NES Zelda Into A Boomer Shooter

Legend of Doom is a mod that rebuilds the original Legend of Zelda in the Doom engine, and you can download and play it for free (with some third-party help).

We found out about its existence thanks to artist David Cooper on Twitter, who posted a clip from the mod. The clip is both familiar and surreal. Enemies pop in in a cloud of smoke, and all the sprites are almost exact translations of the original game, albeit blown up to size. The UI carries over some elements from the Legend of Zelda, but Doomguy is also there, looking gruff and tough with Link’s dainty green hat.

From all appearances, and according to its trailer, the mod is an entirely faithful recreation of the classic game, featuring all nine dungeons and the entire overworld. The mod first released in October 2021, but has received a number of quality-of-life updates since then, the most recent being from Feburary 2022. With some extra tools, you can even play it in VR, via a story from Polygon.

This mod was made by DeTwelve, who doesn’t have any other projects to their name. According to the lone tweet on their page, they are currently working on UI updates and Voxel graphics for Legend of Doom, after which they will start work on another, unnamed project. You can download the mod on Moddb, though you’ll also need the third-party program GZDoom.
