The Legend Of Zelda Movie Director Swinging For Live-Action Miyazaki Aesthetics

When it was announced last month that Sony and Nintendo would be teaming up to finally make a live-action Legend of Zelda film, the fan frenzy hit the fan with dream casts and what game the movie should be like. While director Wes Ball hasn’t specified what game the movie will be adapted from–if any one game in particular–he knows what he wants it to look like.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Ball said he wants to channel legendary animation director Hayao Miyazaki’s works into the film as much as possible and hopes he can make that happen.

“[Legend of Zelda is ] this awesome fantasy-adventure movie that isn’t like Lord of the Rings, it’s its own thing,” he explained. “I’ve always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki. That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that.”

Alongside Ball, who is also a producer on the film, Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) is writing the screenplay. Since the introduction of the world of Princess Zelda and her companion and fellow adventurer Link, 25 different have been made for the series. The latest, Tears of the Kingdom, received high marks this past year and is up for Game of the Year.

While not going into any story details, Ball promises it’s going to be awesome. “My whole life has led up to this moment. I grew up on Zelda and it is the most important property, I think, that’s untapped IP, if you will. So we very much are working hard to do something. We’re not just trying to do it because we can. We want to make something really special.”
