The Minecraft Community Is "Boycotting" This Year's Mob Vote

Mojang is once again hosting its annual Mob vote, an event where the community can vote between three different mobs to be added to Minecraft. But unlike past Mob Votes that added in creatures like the Sniffer, a large portion of the fan base has decided to “boycott” this year’s Mob Vote instead of participating.

The Mob Vote was originally announced earlier this month, and players have the option to pick from the following mobs: a Crab that can place blocks further away when building, an Armadillo that can be used to craft Wolf armor, and the Penguin that can make boats travel faster.

The community began pushing back against this year’s vote shortly after it was announced. A photo began making its way through X (formerly Twitter), that photo reads:

“Please stop the vote, and either release all of the mobs or none at all. It would make a lot more sense, instead of teasing the fanbase with three good ideas, and only adding one. Kind Regards, Your Loyal & Loving Fans #StopTheMobVote.”

Shortly after that, a change.org petition called “Stop the Mob Vote: Put an end to the scrapping of great ideas” was created, and it currently has over 300,000 signatures. As the name suggests, the goal is to abolish the vote. In the petition, the organizers their disinterest by saying:

“The Mob Vote generates engagement by tearing the community apart, leaving fantastic ideas on the cutting room floor, and teasing content that will never be seen in the game. … In the past, with fan favorites like the Moobloom not making it into the game, and with content creators mobilizing their fanbases to vote for the least popular option for the joke of screwing over the other voters. This shows that the mob vote is inherently flawed.”

Over the past weekend, the online movement has taken on a life of its own. People began creating Minecraft-inspired revolutionary and union propaganda posters to spread awareness. If you look up #MinecraftMobVote or #StopTheMobVote on Twitter, you’ll find various posts expressing similar sentiments.

You’ll find similar posts if you look up the same hashtags on TikTok. Some users have even begun using a specific speech that Johnny Silverhand says in Cyberpunk 2077 to help get their message across.

It’s unclear if this trend will be effective because voting begins on October 13 and ends on October 15, which is the same day Minecraft Live is scheduled to air and will reveal the winner. For more Minecraft news, check out our story detailing how the latest DLC lets you have NERF battles.
