One of the most iconic horror movie settings is officially on the market for the first time in 45 years. The Freeling house in the 1982 classic Poltergeist is for sale and the insides have been preserved, so it looks like it did in the movie.
Lauren Murdock of Equity Union announced the availability on Wednesday, confirming the original owners of the house are selling, and is going for $1.175 million.
According to the property description, “the formal dining room leads to the infamous kitchen where fans of the movie will love to see it’s still in its original form”. The home has four bedrooms, and 2.5 baths and is over 2,373 sq. feet. of living space on a 16,000 sq. foot lot.
The movie was directed by Tobe Hooper and produced by Steven Spielberg, who loved the look of the house since the beginning of production.
“Steven liked that house because it was the end of the road,” production designer Jeff Spencer recalled in an interview in 2015. “It was a two-story Valley-type mock Tudor and it just fit everything. The neighborhood [was what] we call ‘Spielbergia,’ where E.T. and a couple of his other films were shot. He always wanted to be in normal residential areas.”
Meanwhile, a new Poltergeist TV show is in the works.
