The Super Mario Bros. Movie Is Starting Off Strong At The Box Office

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has had an impressive opening. According to Deadline, the animated film earned $26.5 million at the box office on Thursday, totaling $58.2 million domestic sales from the movie’s first two days in theaters. Adding in international numbers, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has earned $120.7 million so far.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was expected to have a big launch, as reported by Deadline, estimated to earn $225 million or more for its first (extended) weekend–Wednesday to Sunday–in theaters. Domestic expectations sat at $125 million–something The Super Mario Bros. Movie looks on track to achieve.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie user scores over at GameSpot’s sister site Metacritic are also generally positive, hovering around an 8.6/10. Critic reviews, on the other hand, are a bit more of a mixed bag.

GameSpot’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie review scored the movie an 8/10. Critic Phil Owens praised the movie for its exciting action sequences, stating, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie never feels reverent of the Mario IP, but it’s also never disrespectful. It’s a spot that might not have worked if the film weren’t so well put together–fortunately for us, though, The Super Mario Bros., could end up being one of the best big-budget action flicks of the year.”
