The Thing Remaster Announced By Nightdive Studios

A remaster of The Thing, a 2002 action-adventure game based on John Carpenter’s classic 1982 film, is on the way.

Nightdive Studios–the developer behind game remasters ranging from franchises like Turok to Star Wars–teased on X (formerly known as Twitter) that it would reveal its next game on June 7. The image on the social media post below looks identical to the background of The Thing’s box art from the early 2000s, only in a different color from the original blue, leaving pretty much everyone to guess what was coming ahead of the full reveal.

The Thing isn’t a retelling of the 1982 movie, which starred Kurt Russell, but instead picks up after the film. GameSpot’s The Thing review was positive at the time, but notes “it could have been great” and specifically calls out “a wonky control scheme.” It’ll be interesting to see if that aspect is addressed if Nightdive is in fact remastering the title.

The latest restoration project from Nightdive was PO’ed Definitive Edition last month. The 1995 game got updated graphics and a new hardcore difficulty mode as well. The developer also released a remaster of Star Wars Dark Forces earlier this year, which was the first FPS in the franchise’s history.

Currently, a collection of Nightdive’s games are part of Humble’s retro FPS bundle, including the Turok trilogy and Doom 64. You can check out the Steam page for The Thing: Remastered here.
