Production has started on the final season of The Walking Dead. Season 11 will wrap up the main series of the long-running zombie show, and it will start airing later this year.
News that Season 11 is now filming was revealed on Twitter by Kevin Deiboldt, one of the show’s writers and producers. He posted a sketch of a zombie, accompanied by the words “first day of film Season 11.” This was followed by an image tweeted by the show’s official account, which showed a clapperboard in front of a decrepit house and windmill. Season 11 will be a longer season than previous ones and will consist of 24 episodes that will air across 2021 and 2022. It was announced that this will be the final season in September last year by showrunner Angela Kang and chief content officer Scott M. Gimple, who promised an “epic final season, the last chapter of a multi-year saga of people figuring out how to live in a broken world.”
Of course, this is hardly the end of AMC’s hugely popular show. Season 10 isn’t over yet–six new episodes were added to the season, and they will air on AMC from February 28. These episodes will break from the show’s traditional ensemble format and focus on separate characters, a format which allowed the production to continue under COVID-safe conditions last year.
Beyond that, Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride will reprise their long-running roles Daryl and Carol for a spin-off series, while Andrew Lincon will return to the franchise for the Rick Grimes movies. There’s also an anthology show titled Tales of the Walking Dead in the works.
