A fourth Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland is on the way, but Holland is feeling “a little apprehensive about it.” Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Holland said part of him wants to walk away now because he would be going out on a high note.
“There’s a bit of a stigma about the fourth one in all franchises. I feel like we hit a home run with our first franchise and there’s a part of me that wants to walk away with my head held high and pass the baton to the next lucky kid that gets to bring this character to life,” Holland said.
Also in the interview, Holland made it clear that, after meeting with Marvel to discuss the next Spider-Man movie, he is feeling “really, really happy” about where it’s headed. So it sounds like he will not walk away, but is at least having those thoughts inside his head. He might also be contractually obligated to keep making Spider-Man movies.
This isn’t the first time Holland has talked about retiring as Spider-Man. In 2021, Holland said, “I don’t want to be responsible for holding back the next young person that comes in who deserves it just as much so.”
In the new interview, Holland said discussions were underway about Spider-Man 4 prior to the start of the WGA strike. Holland sat down with producer Amy Pascal, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, and executive producer Rachel O’Connor to discuss the film.
“It’s a collaborative process. The first few meetings were about, ‘Why would we do this again?’ And I think we found the reason why. I’m really, really happy with where we’re at in terms of the creative,” he said.
Before this, producer Amy Pascal addressed the possibility of another Spider-Man movie starring Holland. She said “of course” there will be another movie, but the script is not being developed at this time due to the ongoing writers’ strike. “We’re all being supporters and whenever they get themselves together, we’ll get started,” she said.
Holland has starred in three mainline Spider-Man movies so far, including Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). Holland has also played Spider-Man in multiple Avengers movies.
In addition to Holland’s next Spider-Man movie, a Spider-Woman film is in the works and will be here “sooner than you’d expect.”
