“If you feel it, chase it,” seems like the mantra for Glen Powell’s character Tyler Owens in the debut trailer for Twisters, a sequel to the 1996 classic. Let’s just say the so-called Tornado Wrangler will be getting exactly what he asks for in the upcoming movie.
The Twisters trailer sets the stakes for Owens as well as Kate Cooper, played by Where the Crawdads Sing star Daisy Edgar-Jones. She apparently had a horrific experience with a tornado that’s teased early on the video but gets roped back in with Owens somehow. In fact, at one point the duo are chasing twin tornadoes.
Powell, known for Top Gun: Maverick, was in talks to join Twisters back in April 2023, though plot details were under wraps then. It’s now known his character is a “charming and reckless social-media superstar,” according to the movie’s synopsis. To add to the description, he’s heard saying in the trailer: “You don’t face your fears, you ride ’em.”
Set in central Oklahoma, Twisters will also star Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts), Brandon Perea (Nope), Sasha Lane (Loki), and Maura Tierney (Liar Liar, The Iron Claw). Minari and Mandalorian director Lee Isaac Chung will helm the sequel, with The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith behind the script. There don’t appear to be any direct character connections with the first film.
Twisters was fast-tracked in October 2022 and slated to hit the silver screen July 19. The original–starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt–brought in almost $500 million at the worldwide box office.
