During the NFL AFC Championship game, Paramount+ released a new trailer for the upcoming Halo TV series. The long-awaited adaptation will debut March 24 on the Paramount+ streaming service.
The new clip features just about everything a Halo fan could want in a true full trailer, including lots of Covenant exposition, energy sword action, Master Chief brandishing a Gatling gun, a shot at who could be the Arbiter, a number of very familiar vehicles, and, of course, Cortana. What’s Halo without Cortana keeping Chief company inside that helmet?
The trailer sets up the war against the invading Covenant, positioning Master Chief and his fellow Spartans as the last hope for the universe as they search for a Halo ring. “Find the Halo, win the war,” Chief says, only slightly sounding like he’s riffing on “save the cheerleader, save the world” from Heroes.
What we still don’t know is whether or not Chief will ever show his face. We can see the other Spartans in the trailer without their helmets, but never Chief. However, one of the first shots of the iconic video game hero shows him from behind, out of his Spartan suit. It remains to be seen if this is a flashback or not.
The series should be a great point of entry for fans looking to revisit the previous trailer released during The Game Awards back in December, which shows off Pablo Schreiber as the Master Chief and sets up some of the story and setting that viewers will experience. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly recently, Schreiber said it was a “herculean task” to play Master Chief, in part because of his intense workout schedule to get into shape to play the famous Xbox hero. As the footage shows, Schreieber was true to his word in that previous interview in indicating that the Halo series will be a “classic hero’s journey” that will “crack the veneer” of Master Chief. Even for fans who are familiar with the six core games, several spin-offs, and an expanded narrative universe-spanning many other media forms, the show will bring something new–343 Industries head of transmedia Kiki Wolfkill recently explained that the show will exist outside the established canon and in the “Silver Timeline.”
The Halo series will launch on Paramount+ in 2022, and is being produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television. While it’ll still be a while before the show debuts, you can sit back and read the main timeline’s novels and comic books, watch the several vignettes from Halo: Nightfall, or try spin-off games such as Halo Wars 2.
