Where's The Next Mario Game? Miyamoto Responds

Nintendo’s iconic Mario series hasn’t seen a new entry in what might be understood to be the main series since Super Mario Odyssey, which launched to great acclaim in 2017 for the Switch. Fans are wondering when they might get the next installment in the core series. Shigeru Miyamoto, who created Mario, gave fans a small update in a new interview with IGN.

Asked by the site why Nintendo is not releasing a new Mario game alongside the opening of Super Nintendo World in Hollywood and the Super Mario Bros. movie in April, Miyamoto replied, “We’re always working on Mario.” He added: “So when we get to a time where we can share information, we’ll certainly do so.”

Odyssey is one of the best-selling Switch games of all time, reaching more than 25 million units sold as of December 31, 2022. It is also a critical darling, earning high review scores, including a rare 10/10 from GameSpot.

As Miyamoto mentioned, Super Nintendo World just opened at Universal Studios Hollywood, and it’ll expand to the theme park’s site in Orlando in the future. As for the Super Mario Bros. Movie, the film releases on April 7 in the US, featuring Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario.

Historically, Nintendo tends to, but doesn’t always, release new entries in the mainline Mario series around the launch of new hardware. Nintendo is working on the next console to follow the Switch, but no official details have been announced.

Some of the most popular and beloved major Mario games over the years have included Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel.
