Don't Expect A Remake Of The First Metal Gear Solid Anytime Soon

Remakes and remasters of classic games are nothing new, but definitely becoming more and more common, with games like Final Fantasy 7, Resident Evil 2 and 4, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 hitting consoles all in the past four years. However, even though we’ll soon get a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3, don’t expect one for the first entry anytime soon.

In an interview with Famitsu, and translated by business insider Genki, Metal Gear Solid series producer Noriaki Okamura didn’t exactly shut down the possibility of other remakes–similar to the aforementioned Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, but made it abundantly clear there are no plans for another one shortly.

“Before everyone who was involved in the original is gone, we need to create a path to preserve the Metal Gear series for 10 or 50 years into the future,” Okamura said. “I think this is something we have to do.”

It’s interesting to note though as Konami is already heavily involved in another path with a series of remakes and re-releases. The Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection, a Volume 1, bundles the first five games including Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. A volume 2 is in the works, presumably with parts of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain.

Even Metal Gear Solid was remade for the Nintendo GameCube in 2004, called Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, and has become a very in-demand collector’s item.

Okumara continued that the company is currently deciding what to do next for the next steps of the franchise, but will wait to see what the reception to Metal Gear Solid Delta is before moving forward on next steps.
