Dimension 20 is back for another season with our magical misfits as Misfits and Magic Season 2 has been announced for the next adventure in the dome. And it’s a full season this time around–unlike the four-episode Season 1, Season 2 will have 11.
Misfits and Magic Season 2 sees Aabria Iyengar return to the dome as the Game Master, and Brennan Lee Mulligan, Erika Ishii, Danielle Radford, and Lou Wilson reprise their roles as Evan Kelmp, K, Sam Black, and Whitney Jammer.
Picking up three years after the events of Season 1–which saw four normal high-school kids learning the ropes of attending a magic school and bashing the absurd and nonsensical nature of arcane academics–Season 2 tells a story about how Evan, K, Sam, and Jammer have to contend with the transition to adulthood. They’re each trying to figure out what to do, while at the same time, magical disaster threatens their livelihood and friends. I got big Fantasy High Junior Year vibes watching the trailer.
In that trailer, Iyengar continues to push the envelope when it comes to what a Game Master can accomplish when it comes to visual storytelling. At one point, a moving and responsive face is even projected onto a tablet named Tabby, allowing an NPC to break through and speak to the other players (Tabby seems to be voiced by Zac Oyama, another Dimension 20 mainstay).
The last time Iyengar led a story in the dome, Burrow’s End (in which Mulligan and Ishii were also players), she fought against the constraints of D&D 5e’s combat-heavy system to tell a great story. I cannot wait to see what she does returning to Misfits and Magic, which utilizes the much more roleplay-driven Kids on Brooms tabletop system.
This will also be the first Dimension 20 adventure to feature Iyengar, Mulligan, Ishii, and Wilson since they launched Worlds Beyond Number, an independent audio-only podcast where the four play games together. Their repertoire and chemistry has only skyrocketed since then and I’m eager to see how that plays out in front of cameras, especially with Danielle Radford thrown into the mix–she was a constant comedic delight in Dimension 20’s Mentopolis as Anastasia Tension.
Misfits and Magic Season 2 will kick off September 25, with new episodes premiering every Wednesday.
