Keanu Reeves: actor, person with excellent taste in motorcycles, video game star, and soon-to-be published novelist. Best known for his work on the big screen in The Matrix and John Wick as well as the rebel rocker Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077, Reeves has now co-authored a book with China Miéville, an award-winning writer of speculative fantasy and science fiction. The Book of Elsewhere releases next Tuesday, July 23, and is available to preorder in hardcover at Amazon for $21, which is 30% off its $30 list price.
The Book of Elsewhere is inspired by the Boom Studios comic book series BRZRKR, which Reeves co-created with Matt Kindt and Ron Garney. BRZRKR also happens to be receiving a new limited-edition hardcover edition later this year.
“There have always been whispers. Legends. The warrior who cannot be killed. Who’s seen a thousand civilizations rise and fall. He has had many names: Unute, Child of Lightning, and Death himself. These days, he’s known simply as ‘B,'” the plot synopsis for The Book of Elsewhere reads. “And he wants to be able to die. But when an all-too-mortal soldier comes back to life, the impossible event ultimately points toward a force even more mysterious than B himself. One at least as strong. And one with a plan all its own.”
For context, because that indeed sounds pretty weird: The source material, BRZRKR, tells the story of an unkillable immortal warrior with a death wish, who works with a US black-ops group under the codename of B. In exchange for their help, B assists the group by carrying out dangerous missions for them. Imagine Deadpool if he were haunted by millennia of war, and you’ll have a good idea of what to expect from BRZRKR and The Book of Elsewhere.
If you’d like to check out the BRZRKR series but don’t want to wait for the limited-edition containing the complete 12-issue run, there are a few graphic novel collections available for cheap at Amazon. It’s a pretty good series with action-packed art, as it examines the cost of immortality and what it’s like to fight a war with no end.
