Star Ocean: The Second Story R Drops To Best Price Yet In Early Prime Day Deal

Just days before Prime Day, the stunning Star Ocean: The Second Story R remake has been discounted to $30 on PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch (down from $50). The Second Story R has only received a handful of discounts since it launched last year, and this is the lowest we’ve seen it retail for yet. At Amazon, the deal is only available for the Nintendo Switch version at the moment. Meanwhile, GameStop has the $30 price for PS5 and PS4, too. PC players can snag a Star Ocean Steam key for only $35.

Similar to several other recent Square Enix RPGs, Star Ocean: Second Story R sports an “HD-2D” graphical style that bridges the gap between the past and present by using 2D pixel-art character sprites and 3D environments with modernized lighting and post-processing effects. The effect works remarkably well, creating a retro-inspired game with crisp 4K visuals. This version of the game features both English and Japanese voice acting, a newly arranged soundtrack, and several quality-of-life changes. Overall, it’s a nice balance of nostalgic fun mixed with contemporary ideas, making it ideal for series veterans and newcomers.

“Star Ocean: The Second Story R is a remake that manages to not only have the retro feel of its older PS1 and PSP incarnations, but also make it feel fresh with new battle mechanics, as well as audio and visuals updates. It may not be the big break that’ll finally make the Star Ocean franchise explode in popularity, but it’s a fine Japanese RPG on its own terms,” George Yang wrote in GameSpot’s Star Ocean: The Second Story R review. This Prime Day deal is the perfect chance to check the game out for yourself–but grab it soon, since it’s likely to sell out quickly.
