Final Fantasy Creator Has No Interest In Returning To The Series

Final Fantasy Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi said he has no interest in returning to the series after partnering up with Square Enix for the PC and console version of Fantasian, a game previously only available on mobile devices.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Sakaguchi said he has switched to a consumer of the Final Fantasy series now, particularly Final Fantasy XIV. He doesn’t want to know how games in the series are made now, as he feels that it would impact his enjoyment of playing it. “If I take on the Final Fantasy brand again, I don’t know if I’ll be able to genuinely enjoy Final Fantasy XIV as much,” he explained.

Sakaguchi also said that his studio, Mistwalker, is working on a new game and in the process of finalizing its story. Mistwalker’s previous games include cult classics like Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon for PC and Xbox 360. However, Sakaguchi said he also has no interest in bringing them to new platforms. Good news, though: both games are playable via backward compatibility on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

Fantasian was first released in 2021 for Apple Arcade. Its updated version, Fantasian: Neo Dimension, will launch this winter for PC, PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox. The game sits at a score of 80 on GameSpot’s sister site, Metacritic.
